Rangamati, Sep 03 (V7N) - Ending months of speculation, Angsui Prue Chowdhury has stepped down from his role as Chairman of the Rangamati Hill District Council. He officially announced his resignation through a press release sent to the media on Tuesday evening.

Chowdhury confirmed the resignation when contacted for details. Following the fall of the autocratic government during the anti-discrimination movement, discussions were intense about restructuring the Rangamati District Council. Before the new names for the Chairman and members were announced by the incoming anti-discrimination government, Angsui Prue Chowdhury, a key leader of the Rangamati Awami League from Kaukhali upazila, decided to resign voluntarily. A notification regarding the new council members is expected to be issued soon.

In his press release, Chowdhury noted that he took on the interim chairmanship of the Rangamati Hill District Council on December 14, 2020, as per the wishes of the former Prime Minister and the trust placed in him by his respected leader Dipankar Talukdar. During his tenure, he endeavored to advance the district across various sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, environment, economic development, women's empowerment, and tourism, with the goal of transforming Rangamati into a thriving and harmonious district. Despite his efforts and various development initiatives under Dipankar Talukdar’s guidance, he expressed regret that he could not fully realize these objectives due to prevailing conditions and limitations. He views this as a major personal failure and departs with a sense of regret.

Chowdhury expressed his intention to make the Rangamati Hill District Council a transparent, accountable, and dignified institution, free from political and communal biases. He deeply regrets not achieving this vision and offers a heartfelt apology. He highlighted that, despite the Hill District Council's crucial role in implementing the 1997 Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord, the council has often been viewed negatively due to political influences, arbitrariness, and corruption, which he found troubling and embarrassing.

He urged future officeholders to earnestly pursue the council’s original goals, despite existing challenges. He hoped that the initiatives he started for the district’s development would continue. Chowdhury expressed gratitude to all council members, staff, district administration, police, military, department heads, Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council, journalists, and Awami League leaders, including Dipankar Talukdar, for their support. He took pride in the successes of his term and accepted responsibility for the shortcomings. He wished everyone well and reaffirmed his commitment to continue supporting the people of Rangamati in the future.
