Additionally, brokers gather mobile numbers of those visiting the station, including both complainants and defendants, and then extort substantial amounts from both parties under the guise of facilitating mediation or resolution.
There are significant connections between some brokers and certain sub-inspectors (SI) at Ramu Police Station. For example, Jamshedul Haque, the son of Zahid Computer Shop’s owner, is known to have close ties with SI Sunayan Barua. Jamshed is accused of taking Tk 27,000 and a gold chain weighing 7 annas from a widow named Jannatul Ferdous, promising to assist with her case. However, on August 31, following intervention by students from the anti-discrimination movement, Jamshed was forced to return Tk 25,000 and the gold chain through SI Sunayan Barua.
Student leader Mohammadul Haque Joni said, "Certain police officers still have connections with the brokers from the previous fascist government. Such activities would not be possible without their involvement. I hope that people seeking services at Ramu Police Station will receive proper assistance through the police. This issue should also be addressed by higher police authorities."
Another student leader, Ariful Islam Noyon, noted, "Previously, during the authoritarian Awami League regime, brokers extorted large sums from service seekers. It is regrettable that even after the government change, these brokers remain active."
Attempts to reach Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Taher Dewan of Ramu Police Station for his comments on the broker activities were unsuccessful as his phone was not answered.
