Rajshahi, July 1 (V7N) — The Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) marked its 33rd anniversary with a vibrant celebration on Tuesday morning at the RMP headquarters. The event commenced with the formal inauguration, featuring balloon and pigeon releases, presided over by Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian.
The ceremony’s chief guest was Khondkar Azim Ahmed NDC, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi. Special guests included Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Principal Officer of Saroda Police Academy Mir Rezaul Alam, Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan, District Commissioner Afia Akhtar, District Police Superintendent Farzana Islam, Lieutenant Colonel Masud Parvez, Commander of RAB-5, along with senior officials from various administrative and law enforcement agencies and distinguished guests.
Following the inaugural ceremony, a colorful rally was held, accompanied by cake cutting and a brief discussion session. During the event, Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian recounted the RMP’s 33-year journey of success and reiterated a firm commitment to working more dedicatedly for the welfare of the public.
Commissioner Sufian said, “Since its inception on July 1, 1992, RMP has played a vital role in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety. Today, it has evolved into a modern, well-organized, and self-reliant police unit.”
Initially, the RMP jurisdiction covered only 92 square kilometers and consisted of 4 police stations. Now, it has expanded to cover 472 square kilometers and includes 12 police stations: Boalia Model, Rajpara, Chandrima, Motihar, Katakhali, Belpukur, Shah Mokhdum, Airport, Paba, Kashiadanga, Damkura, and Kornahar.
In addition, the RMP operates 12 police outposts and 3 specialized police units. Its activities are coordinated through four crime divisions based in Boalia, Kashiadanga, Shah Mokhdum, and Motihar.
Under its umbrella, the RMP maintains various specialized branches, including the Counter-Terrorism and Security Branch (CTSB), Riot Control Division, Traffic Division, Detective Branch, Prosecution Department, Estate and Development, Welfare Branch, and Victim Support Center.
At the time of its formation, the RMP workforce numbered 1,135 personnel. Today, it has grown to 3,414 officers and staff. This increase in manpower, coupled with structural expansion, has transformed the RMP into a capable and efficient force.
Commissioner Sufian also highlighted, “The reputation Rajshahi has earned as a clean, peaceful city and an educational hub owes much to the efforts of RMP. Alongside enforcing the law, this force has gained the trust of the city’s residents through its service-oriented approach.”
For context, Rajshahi District was established in 1772. The Rajshahi Municipality was founded in 1876 and upgraded to a City Corporation in 1991. The RMP was subsequently launched in 1992, covering the city corporation area.
Today, the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police is not just a law enforcement body but a source of pride and a trusted guardian of public safety for the people of Rajshahi.
