Rangamati, July 24 (V7N) – Heavy rainfall on Thursday night caused significant landslides along the Sajek-Baghaihat road in the Baghaichhari Upazila of Rangamati, resulting in the blockage of all vehicular movement between Khagrachari and Sajek. The landslides occurred at three locations on the road: Nandarama, Chailyatoli, and Champak Nagar.

While no casualties have been reported, it has been confirmed that approximately 425 tourists are stranded in the Sajek area due to the road blockages. Additionally, numerous vehicles have been trapped on both sides of the landslides, leaving passengers, including women and children, facing severe hardships.

Upon receiving the news, firefighters from Dighinala immediately started working to clear the debris and restore traffic flow.

Atulal Chakma, the Chairman of Sajek Union Parishad, confirmed the landslides and mentioned that large boulders and fallen trees had also obstructed the road. He stated, "We have engaged local people to help clear the debris, but removing the large rocks and trees requires heavy machinery and bulldozers." The issue has been reported to the Six Bengal Battalion of the Bangladesh Army stationed at Baghaihat and the Upazila Executive Officer Shirin Akter.

When contacted, the Khagrachhari Roads and Highways Department stated that the road does not fall under their jurisdiction, and advised contacting the Army, as the road is under the control of the ECBR (Eastern Command Border Road).
