Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N) — Italy has contributed €2.5 million to support humanitarian assistance and protection for Rohingya refugees taking shelter in Bangladesh, according to a press release from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued on Tuesday.
The new financial support comes from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and its Directorate General for Migration Policy. The assistance will help sustain vital community-based protection programs, prevent gender-based violence, strengthen child protection, and ensure the registration and issuance of identity documents to safeguard refugee rights.
UNHCR Representative in Bangladesh, Ivo Freijsen, praised Italy’s continued partnership, stating, “Italy remains a steadfast partner in addressing the displacement crisis. This generous contribution from the Italian people will help meet urgent needs and strengthen protection for Rohingya refugees facing ongoing hardship and risks. Community-based protection initiatives are vital for preserving dignity and self-reliance amid mounting humanitarian pressures.”
Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Antonio Alessandro, reaffirmed Italy’s long-standing support since the beginning of the crisis. “Italy has been actively contributing through the Joint Response Plan to address this devastating humanitarian emergency. Our continued support helps ensure the Rohingya’s dignity and hope for a better future. We also appreciate Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment in hosting the refugees,” he said.
He added that Italy remains engaged with relevant partners to seek a long-term and sustainable solution to the crisis, emphasizing shared international responsibility in supporting both the refugees and the host communities.
