Dhaka, Jan 29 (V7N) — BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has hinted at possible street protests if necessary to pressure the government into taking corrective measures. He made the remarks at a discussion titled "July Uprising: Media and Journalism," organized by the Bangladesh Journalists Association (BJA) at the National Press Club on Wednesday.
Salahuddin criticized the interim government, stating that it had not taken any visible steps to prosecute the Awami League, which he described as a "fascist party." He suggested that the BNP would take new initiatives to ensure the government is held accountable.
"If the government does not take corrective measures, we may have to take to the streets again to bring them back on the right track," he said.
The BNP leader also demanded that the Awami League be prosecuted for alleged acts of genocide. Additionally, he called for a national election on August 5, arguing that the people should decide whether the Awami League remains eligible to contest.
At the event, Nurul Haque Nur, President of the People's Rights Council, reflected on the July-August Uprising, asserting that it was the result of a 16-year-long movement rather than a short-term success. He urged all political groups to seize the opportunity to "build a new state" based on the lessons of the uprising.
The discussion was chaired by BJA President Partha Sarathi Das and included speeches by Dhaka Union of Journalists President Shahidul Islam, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Senior Assistant Secretary General Bashir Jamal, and other prominent figures.
