Sujanagar, Feb 02 (V7N)Abdul Wahab, the President of Sujanagar Upazila Awami League, was forcibly snatched from a police car by local leaders, activists, and residents of Mathurapur in Sujanagar Municipality on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 5 pm in front of Mathurapur High School, where Wahab’s residence is also located.

Background of the Incident

Wahab, a former Upazila Chairman and Municipal Mayor, is facing charges related to his involvement in the attack on students during the anti-discrimination student movement of July-August 2024. The police had been attempting to arrest Wahab, who was reportedly leaving the mosque after offering Asr prayers. They arrested him and began taking him away in a police vehicle. However, local residents and Awami League activists surrounded the police car and demanded that Wahab be released. When the police refused, tensions escalated, and the locals forcibly snatched Wahab from the car.

Violence and Injuries

During the confrontation, a scuffle broke out, resulting in injuries to five police officers. The officers were later provided primary medical treatment. The police were eventually forced to retreat without Wahab, as numerous men and women from the locality joined the effort to free him.

Police Response

Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa confirmed the incident and explained that Wahab had been a fugitive accused in the anti-discrimination movement attack case.
The OC stated that despite their efforts to negotiate with the locals, the situation escalated, and Wahab was forcibly removed from the police car. OC Golam Mostafa confirmed the injuries of the police officers and mentioned that legal actions regarding the incident are being considered. However, the names of the injured police officers are yet to be disclosed.

This incident has raised concerns about law enforcement in the area and the growing tension between political factions.
