Comilla, Aug 15 (V7N) — Barkatullah Bulu, Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), described the party's founder, the late President Ziaur Rahman, as “one of the greatest statesmen of the century,” even drawing a parallel to Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA). He made these remarks on Thursday while addressing the bi-annual conference of Monohorganj Upazila BNP, held at the Laksam Municipality Auditorium in Comilla.
Speaking as the chief guest, Bulu said, “From the beginning of time until the Day of Judgment, reform is a continuous and necessary process. But if anyone attempts to delay elections in the name of reform, the people of this country will not accept it. Without an elected government, neither independence nor sovereignty can be sustained.”
He added that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, throughout her political career, never compromised with injustice, and that principle will continue in the upcoming national elections.
Bulu also praised the Bangladesh Army for its role in preserving the spirit of independence. Referring to the student-led anti-discrimination movement in 2024, he said, “That movement was a reflection of the army’s commitment to justice. Those who speak against the military are enemies of Bangladesh’s sovereignty and independence. They have no right to seek votes or contest elections.”
Highlighting the current political and administrative challenges, Bulu said, “The only way out of the present crisis—including law and order—is through elections. There is no alternative to a democratically elected government.”
The conference was presided over by Monohorganj Upazila BNP Convenor Ilyas Patwari and inaugurated by Zakaria Taher Sumon, Convenor of Comilla South District BNP.
BNP Central Industry Affairs Secretary Md. Abul Kalam delivered the keynote speech. Special guests included the party's Assistant Organizing Secretary for Comilla Division Md. Mostak Mia, Comilla South District Joint Convenor Amiruzzaman Amir, Member Secretary Ashiqur Rahman Mahmud Wasim, Comilla City BNP President Udbatul Bari Abu, and Samira Azim Dola, daughter of late former MP Anwarul Azim.
In the second session of the conference, Ilyas Patwari was declared President, and Professor Sarwar Jahan Bhuiyan Dolon was announced as General Secretary through the endorsement of local councillors.
