Dhaka, Sep 23 (V7N) – The National Citizens Party (NCP) has held the government’s Foreign Affairs Advisor responsible for the recent attack on its member secretary Akhtar Hossain in New York, USA.
At an urgent press conference on Tuesday afternoon, NCP Convener Nahid Islam alleged that the incident occurred due to the government’s and ministry’s failure to ensure proper security. “This attack is part of a continuation of targeted violence against leaders of the July mass uprising,” he said.
Citing previous incidents, Nahid Islam pointed out that NCP leaders had earlier faced attempted attacks abroad, and an attempt to kill party leaders was carried out during the July march in Gopalganj. “So far, no appropriate action has been taken against these continuous conspiracies and misdeeds,” he added.
The NCP convener also accused Awami League leaders and affiliates of receiving bail in serious cases and then fleeing, while many openly threaten families of martyrs.
He placed several demands at the press conference:
-
A complete investigation into the New York attack.
-
Removal of all Awami League associates appointed to the Foreign Ministry during the previous government.
-
Publication of the names of the five individuals arrested for the attack on Advisor Mahfuz Alam.
-
Expedited trial of the July murder case.
-
Trial of the Awami League as a party.
On another note, Nahid Islam criticized the Election Commission (EC) for refusing to allocate the Shapla symbol to the NCP, saying, “The EC has failed to provide any legal justification. We will issue our final response once the EC makes an official decision.”
When asked about a possible merger with the People’s Rights Council, he confirmed that the matter is still at the discussion stage and that the party will announce its decision in due course.
