Dhaka, June 28 (V7N)– Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced on Friday that the BNP, in collaboration with other opposition parties, will soon initiate another round of simultaneous movements to overthrow the current Awami League government, which he described as a ‘usurper.’
“We’ll soon sit with those of us who are carrying out movements together and work out programs through discussions to promptly establish a pro-people and democratic governance system by removing the horrible fascist, monstrous, and usurper regime. I hope we’ll succeed,” Fakhrul stated.
The BNP leader made these remarks while addressing a reunion program organized by Bangladesher Biplobi Workers’ Party at its Segunbagicha office, marking the party’s 20th founding anniversary.
He emphasized that all opposition democratic parties have agreed to work together for the sake of democracy. “I think it’s a significant decision in the history of Bangladesh’s politics.”
Fakhrul highlighted that most opposition parties, including the Biplobi Workers’ Party, have been conducting simultaneous movements for the restoration of democratic rights, voting rights, and the establishment of a democratic state. “We’re working to achieve this goal. I believe our movement will never fail. We’ll surely turn victorious.”
He recounted that Bangladesh was liberated with the aim of establishing democracy and a democratic governance system. “It is unfortunate that this journey was hindered in 1975 through the introduction of one-party rule.”
Fakhrul credited BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia with introducing the polls-time caretaker government system, which he said was a response to a mass demand and created a foundation for developing a democratic culture and governance system.
However, he lamented that the Awami League destroyed democracy by abolishing the caretaker government system, leading the country towards instability and uncertainty. “That process is still ongoing. It has now reached such a situation that Bangladesh’s existence is at stake.”
Fakhrul asserted that Bangladesh is facing a critical juncture, with its sovereignty under threat due to the lack of democracy.
In this context, he stressed the need for a strong movement to secure the unconditional release of the BNP chief from jail and to restore democracy. “Khaleda’s release and democratic movement are not separate issues. These two things are closely interlinked.”
Fakhrul also mentioned that Khaleda Zia is very ill and called upon the country’s people to pray for her speedy recovery.
He announced a three-day program, including a rally in the capital, demanding her unconditional release. “We gave these programs specifically for her release. Because, Khaleda Zia and democracy are synonymous. We have started a movement for protecting democracy and the release of Khaleda Zia.”
