Noakhali, Jun 01 (V7N) – A tragic accident occurred in the Meghna River near Dubarchar, Hatia upazila of Noakhali, when a trawler carrying 41 people capsized due to strong winds and rough waves. So far, 32 passengers have been rescued alive, while 9 remain missing.

The incident took place around 3 PM on Saturday afternoon near Karim Bazar, as the trawler was en route from Bhasan Char to Ali Bazar Ghat in Harani Union.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ibrahim, the vessel had departed from Bhasan Char at approximately 2:30 PM carrying passengers including four policemen, Rohingya patients, Ansar members, and representatives from various NGOs. After traveling 7 to 8 kilometers, the trawler was overwhelmed by the adverse weather conditions and capsized.

“The OC of Bhasanchar Police Station informed the Navy and Coast Guard immediately after the incident,” said ASP Ibrahim. “Rescue operations are ongoing, but bad weather has made communication difficult with the teams.”

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation, although strong currents and turbulent weather continue to hamper their efforts. Families of the missing have gathered at nearby riverbanks in anguish as they await updates on their loved ones.

Authorities are urging all vessels to exercise caution amid worsening monsoon weather, and local officials have reiterated the importance of weather advisories and passenger limits on water routes in such conditions.

Voice7 will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
