Chandpur, Dec 26 (V7N)- At least four people have been reported dead and several others injured after two passenger launches—MV Zakir Samrat-3 and Adventure-9—collided on the Meghna River in Chandpur amid dense fog.

The collision occurred late Thursday night (December 25) when visibility on the river was extremely low.

The deceased have been identified as Abdul Gani, Md. Saju, and Rina Begum of Lalmohan Upazila in Bhola, and Md. Hanif of Charfashion Upazila.

According to eyewitnesses and passengers, MV Zakir Samrat-3 departed from Ghosherhat Ghat in Bhola on Thursday afternoon, heading toward Dhaka with passengers on board. Upon entering the Meghna River area of Chandpur, the launch slowed down due to thick fog. At that time, it collided with the Barisal-bound passenger launch Adventure-9.

The impact severely damaged one side of MV Zakir Samrat-3, twisting its structure and causing panic among passengers. Several people were injured in the collision and were later rescued by nearby vessels and locals.

Rescue operations were carried out following the incident, and injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

River traffic on the route remains risky due to persistent fog, and passengers have been advised to exercise caution while traveling.
