Gazipur, Sep 20 (V7N)- A fire reportedly caused by a gas cylinder leak destroyed around 45 housing units in Gazipur's Sadar Upazila, leaving tenants' furniture and other belongings in ashes.
The incident occurred around 8:30pm on Saturday (September 19) at a residential building owned by Jahangir Hossain, son of local resident Siraj Uddin, in the Baniachala Madhyapara area.
According to locals, tenants had returned from their factory shifts and were preparing meals when a gas cylinder reportedly leaked in one of the rooms. The fire quickly spread to neighboring units, destroying around 45 rooms.
Local residents initially attempted to contain the blaze before notifying the Fire Service. Two units from the Rajendrapur-Chourasta Modern Fire Station arrived and began firefighting operations.
Muhammad Abu Sayem Masum, a senior officer at the fire station, said firefighters received the report around 8:30pm. The blaze was brought under control by 9:40pm and completely extinguished by 11:20pm.
He said a preliminary investigation indicated that the fire originated from a gas cylinder leak.
Landlord Jahangir Hossain said the fire started while tenants were cooking after returning from work and quickly spread to the surrounding rooms. He estimated the total financial loss at around Tk 1 crore.
Tenant Swapna Akter said she noticed the fire after returning home from work and that it spread rapidly to nearby rooms. By the time firefighters brought the blaze under control, most of the belongings in her room had been destroyed.
The affected tenants are now facing severe hardship after losing their homes and belongings in the fire.
