Mongla, Sept 26 (V7N) — The Coast Guard has rescued eight fishermen alive along with their fishing boat after its engine broke down while they were fishing in the deep sea off the Sundarbans.
Coast Guard Media Officer (Dhaka) Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the information on Friday morning.
He said the fishing boat, carrying eight fishermen, was fishing about 11 nautical miles south of Kokilmoni in the Sundarbans when its engine broke down around noon on Sept. 19. The boat remained adrift in the deep sea.
After the boat came within mobile network coverage on Sept. 24, one of the fishermen contacted the boat owner by phone at around 3pm and informed him of the situation. The owner then sought assistance from the Coast Guard Western Zone.
Based on the information provided, a Coast Guard team from Kokilmoni Station immediately launched a rescue operation and rescued all eight fishermen along with the disabled fishing boat from the deep-sea area.
The rescued fishermen were given first aid and necessary food. Arrangements were underway to hand them and the fishing boat over to the owners.
Lieutenant Commander Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue such emergency rescue operations in the future.
