Jhalokathi, Oct 01 (V7N) – The body of a fisherman who went missing while fishing for hilsa in the Bishkhali River in Kathalia upazila of Jhalokathi has been recovered two days after his disappearance.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan Hawlader, 55, son of the late Abdul Majid Hawlader of Ward No. 6 in Awrabunia Union of Kathalia.

Relatives recovered his floating body from the river at around 1:30am on Thursday after searching the area with their own trawler.

According to local residents and family members, Mannan went fishing for hilsa in the Bishkhali River on a trawler at around 3:30pm on Tuesday (Sept 29). At one point, he accidentally fell overboard and drowned.

Fishermen on nearby trawlers saw him fall into the river and immediately joined the search. They continued searching for some time but failed to locate him.

Mohammad Ponir Hawlader, acting chairman of Awrabunia Union, said Mannan suddenly fell into the river and nearby fishermen tried to rescue him but could not find him.

Fire Service and police personnel visited the scene after receiving the report.

Mohammad Khalilur Rahman, station officer of the Kathalia Fire Service, said there was a strong current in the river. An experienced diving team from Barishal Fire Service initially conducted a search operation, but the operation was suspended due to darkness and adverse conditions.

Two days after Mannan went missing, his family members resumed the search in the river late Wednesday night using their own trawler. At around 1:30am, his body surfaced at the spot where he had reportedly fallen into the river.

The relatives recovered the body and took it home.
