Mongla, Oct 28 (V7N) – A cargo vessel carrying 1,200 metric tonnes of coal sank in the Pashur River at Mongla Port after colliding with an oil tanker late Monday night. All nine crew members aboard the vessel survived.

The incident occurred near Sundari Kotha in the Pashur Channel area when the coal-laden cargo ship MV Phulbari was struck by the oil tanker MT Jannatul Ferdous.

According to crew members of the sunken vessel, MV Phulbari was carrying coal from the foreign commercial vessel MV Yas Jupiter, which was anchored at Hiron Point in Mongla Port, and was heading towards Mongla when the collision occurred.

The impact caused MV Phulbari to sink. The vessel is owned by IRS International.

The nine crew members managed to swim to a nearby cargo vessel, preventing any casualties.

The ship was scheduled to transport the coal to Badamtali in Dhaka.

However, port authorities said the vessel sank outside the main Pashur Channel, leaving the principal navigation route unaffected.

Commodore Md Shafiqul Islam Sarker, member (Harbour and Marine) of the Mongla Port Authority, said the Pashur Channel remained safe and vessel movement was continuing normally.

He added that the vessel’s owners were taking steps to salvage the sunken ship.
