The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) reports that 5,495 road incidents nationwide claimed the lives of 5024 killed in 2023.
According to the Jatri Kalyan Samity, a private platform that promotes passenger safety, up to 7,902 people might have perished and 10,372 more could have been injured in 6,261 road accidents nationwide in 2023. This figure is far lower than what they reported in their annual report, which was the annual report earlier this week.
Almost three thousand is a huge difference by anyone's measure. To create their research, Jatri Kalyan Samity examined accident reports that had been published throughout the time in national and local newspapers as well as internet news sites. The regulatory authority, BRTA, provides data gathered from 64 district offices following cross-checking with other relevant parties. Their methodology and resource availability seem to indicate that they are the more reliable authority on the surface.
Referring back to the BRTA report, Nur Mohammad Majumdar, the organization's chairman, stated during a press briefing on Tuesday, January 17 at BRTA Bhaban, located in the city's Banani area, that 433 individuals lost their lives in 483 accidents in December.
The biggest number of fatalities—88 individuals died and 88 more injured in 86 incidents that happened in the Dhaka division—occurred in December. Then came 79 fatalities and 172 injuries from 94 accidents in Chattogram; 63 fatalities and 51 injuries from 74 accidents in Rajshahi; 49 fatalities and 135 injuries from 73 accidents in Khulna; 28 fatalities and 83 injuries from 33 accidents in Barishal; 24 fatalities and 25 injuries from 24 accidents in Sylhet; 54 fatalities and 43 injuries from 55 accidents in Rangpur; and 48 fatalities and 44 injuries from 44 accidents in Mymensingh.
322 accidents resulted in 336 injuries and 333 deaths in January of last year. 308 accidents resulted in 306 deaths and 416 injuries in February. 387 accidents resulted in 415 deaths and 688 injuries in March. 476 accidents resulted in 459 deaths and 705 injuries in April. Finally, 483 accidents resulted in 494 deaths and 649 injuries in May of last year.
In addition, 562 road accidents resulted in 504 fatalities and 785 injuries in June; 533 fatalities and 934 injuries in 566 accidents in July; 376 fatalities and 659 injuries in 458 accidents in August; 410 fatalities and 609 injuries in 454 traffic accidents in September; 394 fatalities and 492 injuries in 437 accidents in October; and 470 fatalities and 518 injuries in 559 accidents in November nationwide.
