Bagerhat, July 2 (V7N) – In a move to promote household-level food security and nutrition, 200 farming families in Morelganj Upazila of Bagerhat have been provided with free vegetable seeds and agricultural inputs under the Family Nutrition Garden Project. The initiative focuses on utilizing fallow lands and homestead spaces for growing vegetables to improve dietary diversity and family nutrition.

The distribution event was held at 12 PM on Wednesday and was organized by the Upazila Agriculture Extension Department. The event was officially inaugurated by Md. Rafiqul Islam, Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Khulna region.

Also present at the event were Md. Motahar Hossain, Deputy Director of DAE Bagerhat, and Lutfa Parvin, Regional Manager of CARE Bangladesh, Khulna. Among others in attendance were Md. Saiful Islam, Upazila Agriculture Officer; Ivana Bila Ritu, Agriculture Extension Officer; Probir Kumar Sarkar, Assistant Agriculture Extension Officer; Dalton Roy, Plant Protection Officer; and Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers Md. Zakir Hossain, Mizanur Rahman, Moshiur Rahman, and Md. Shahidul Islam.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Saiful Islam stated that under the 2024–2025 fiscal year plan, a total of 400 farming families will benefit from the project in phases. In the first phase, 200 families received seeds for 23 types of vegetables, including red amaranth, spinach, bottle gourd, sweet pumpkin, carrots, and cabbage, along with necessary agricultural inputs. The remaining 200 families will receive support in the upcoming second phase.

The Family Nutrition Garden Project is part of a broader government initiative to empower rural communities, improve nutritional outcomes, and utilize idle land for productive and sustainable agriculture.
