Dhaka, Oct 21 (V7N) — In the last 11 years, road accidents across Bangladesh have claimed the lives of 105,338 people, with 149,847 others injured, according to the Jatri Kalyan Samiti. The alarming statistics were shared at a press conference held on Monday by the organisation’s Secretary General, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.

During the press briefing, Chowdhury criticised the mismanagement in the transport sector, saying, “The failure of Obaidul Quader to curb rent anarchy, chaos, and corruption has led to an increase in road accidents.” He argued that despite changes in government triggered by student movements, the same issues continue to plague the transport sector.

He warned that the government could face serious repercussions if it fails to address the current traffic disorder on roads nationwide, including in the capital. Chowdhury further demanded the formation of a transport reform commission to address the growing crisis.

Rubayet Ferdous, a professor at Dhaka University, also spoke at the press conference. He questioned, “Why have prices not decreased two months after Sheikh Hasina’s departure?” and criticised the lack of improvement in the transport sector.

Ferdous added, “What we are witnessing on the roads cannot simply be called accidents—they are acts of structural murder.” He blamed systemic negligence for creating these dangerous conditions and asserted that the interim government has failed both in managing traffic chaos and stabilising commodity prices.

The press conference highlighted a pressing need for immediate reforms to prevent further casualties and restore order in the transport sector.
