Dhaka, Oct 30 (V7N)- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk emphasized the necessity for thorough investigations into all killings and affirmed the importance of freedom of assembly and expression. "Every killing demands investigation. Allowing such acts to go unchecked is not an option," he stated in response to a query on Wednesday.

Türk’s comments came following his meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and several advisers at the close of his two-day visit to Bangladesh. Highlighting the need for human rights-driven reforms, Türk advocated for using "human rights as the compass" to guide the significant winds of change within the country.

Rebuilding civic space and trust in state institutions will be crucial, said Türk, noting that this will require reform of restrictive laws and state mechanisms that have historically limited dissent. "Old habits die hard, but only systematic reforms will safeguard freedoms of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and political participation," he added.

The UN rights chief praised Bangladesh’s steps towards repealing the Cyber Security Act and withdrawing certain speech-related cases under this and the Digital Security Act. He also welcomed the commitment of Prof Yunus to human rights, social justice, and accountability, as well as efforts to address systemic economic inequalities and to reform institutions like law enforcement.

Türk commended the swift formation of commissions tasked with recommending reforms in the judiciary, electoral system, administration, police, constitution, and Anti-Corruption Commission. "I understand that additional commissions are in progress concerning health, media, labor rights, and women's issues. My discussions today with various commissioners emphasized trust-building, inclusivity, and the valuable lessons Bangladesh can draw from other nations facing similar challenges," he shared.
