New York, July 2 (V7N) — State Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani has secured the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor following the final instant runoff voting results. The 33-year-old progressive candidate defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo by a margin of 56% to 44%.
Although Mamdani was widely expected to win since finishing 7 percentage points ahead of Cuomo in the initial round of voting on June 24, he had not achieved the required majority of first-place votes to be declared the outright winner. Under New York City's ranked-choice voting system, voters are allowed to rank up to five candidates in order of preference.
According to calculations released by the New York City Board of Elections, Mamdani gained additional votes from the second and subsequent preferences of those voters who initially chose one of the other nine candidates. These transfers enabled him to surpass Cuomo and secure the majority.
The Associated Press officially called the race in Mamdani's favor on July 1, shortly after the Board of Elections announced the final tabulations.
Zohran Mamdani's victory marks a significant moment for the progressive movement in New York City politics, positioning him as a youthful alternative to the city's established political figures.
