Dhaka, Nov 13 (V7N)- Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman stated that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the undisputed leader of the nation, emphasizing that there is no room to deny his pivotal role in Bangladesh’s history. He also remarked that attempts had been made by a political party to politicize his legacy.

The AG made these comments during a hearing in the High Court on Wednesday regarding a rule issued to explain why the 15th Amendment to the Constitution should not be declared unconstitutional. The High Court bench, led by Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury, was reviewing the case.

The Attorney General further argued that Article 142 of the Constitution, which once included provisions for a referendum, was removed under the 15th Amendment. He expressed a desire to have this provision reinstated, criticizing the amendment process and the manner in which it was passed, claiming that the votes came from MPs who were elected through questionable means.

The case stemmed from a High Court ruling issued on August 19, 2024, where Justice Naima Haider and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar issued a rule questioning the legality of the 15th Amendment, which had abolished the caretaker government system. This amendment, passed on June 30, 2011, also recognized Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the Father of the Nation and increased the number of reserved seats for women in Parliament from 45 to 50.
