Dhaka, Nov 15 (V7N)- The interim government is taking steps to reduce internet costs, addressing the needs of the younger generation, who played a pivotal role in the July uprisings that led to significant political changes.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is reviewing the fragmented licensing structure of the country's internet ecosystem to improve service quality and introduce packages with unlimited validity.
BTRC Chairman Maj Gen Md Emdad Ul Bari (retd) emphasized the importance of affordable, diverse, and secure internet services, noting that reducing data prices is central to the government’s service delivery goals. "We want to make the services safe, affordable, and diverse, and we will do whatever is required for it," he said.
The International Internet Gateway Association of Bangladesh (IIGAB) has proposed reducing bandwidth costs, which, if implemented, would lower internet expenses for consumers. IIGAB President Aminul Hakim explained, "This initiative aims to boost internet usage and expand access to grassroots levels."
In tandem, state-owned Teletalk has introduced "Gen-Z" packages tailored for younger users. The package, inspired by the term "Generation Z" highlighted during the July uprisings, offers unlimited data and year-long bundle options at competitive prices. New customers can get the package for Tk100 in the first 30 days, while existing users can activate it via the MyTeletalk app.
Additionally, the government is formulating a "bandwidth use policy," planning the rollout of 5G, and working to provide affordable Wi-Fi for educational institutions. These measures reflect a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and bridge digital divides across the country.
