Dhaka, Apr 13 (V7N) – Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul has announced that the charge sheet in the Magura child rape case has been prepared and will be submitted to the court on Sunday. He assured that the trial will be completed within 90 days, in accordance with special directives for speedy justice in child abuse cases.
While addressing reporters at the Secretariat, Dr. Nazrul also addressed several pressing legal and political matters currently facing the government.
He stated that model Meghla Alam had been detained by the Ministry of Home Affairs, but the manner of her arrest was not proper. He confirmed that the issue was discussed at the highest levels of government, and while there are allegations against her, a police investigation is ongoing.
Regarding public criticism over bail granted to certain accused individuals, the Legal Advisor clarified that the Law Ministry is not involved in bail decisions from the High Court. “Bail from the lower courts was given in cases where arrests were based on suspicion,” he added, defending the judiciary’s independence in these decisions.
Dr. Nazrul also emphasized the need for a political consensus to repeal the Special Powers Act, calling it a longstanding issue requiring cooperation across party lines.
On financial matters, he revealed that there had been a plot to steal $2 billion from Bangladesh via cyberhacking, but the actual amount stolen was $88 million. “The aim was to economically cripple Bangladesh,” he stated, promising that action will be taken against those involved in the plot.
In a significant update, Dr. Nazrul informed that 7,184 cases filed as political harassment have been withdrawn during the interim government’s tenure.
