Dhaka, Apr 17 (V7N)- Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has emphasized the importance of reinstating the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) for Bangladesh’s access to the US market, saying efforts will be made to reduce the trade deficit by diversifying exports.
“We want normal trade relations with the United States. Especially whether GSP can be reintroduced — because GSP is important for the American market,” Dr. Salehuddin said while speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon (April 17) following a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Economic Affairs and the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement at the Secretariat.
Key Objectives of Upcoming US Visit
The finance advisor is scheduled to leave for the United States on April 19 to participate in the World Bank's Spring Meetings. He outlined the key goals of his 10-day visit, which include:
-
Holding discussions with the World Bank, IMF, ADB, and OPEC Fund on budget support and project financing.
-
Signing two financing agreements, one each with the World Bank and OPEC Fund.
-
Engaging with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) regarding their activities in Cox’s Bazar.
-
Conducting talks with the US Treasury Department on the issue of payment complications for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project, particularly under existing sanctions.
In response to a question about the 90-day suspension of retaliatory tariffs by the US, Dr. Salehuddin said:
“Of course, we will discuss the issue. But not everything will be resolved overnight. US trade representatives are also visiting Bangladesh soon. These matters will be addressed during their visit as well.”
He added that further clarity on financing and cooperation will emerge after his return from the US.
During his visit, the Finance Advisor aims to bolster Bangladesh's economic partnerships with key development institutions and enhance trade dialogue with the United States at a time when Dhaka is pushing for market access, financial aid, and sanction relief for critical infrastructure projects.
