Dhaka, Aug 07 (V7N) – Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul announced that a comprehensive list and documentation of the sufferings of those imprisoned during the July Uprising will be compiled. He emphasized that necessary reforms in the Prison Code will be finalized and implemented by the next government.
Dr. Nazrul made these remarks at the July Prisoners Memorial Program organized by the Law Ministry at Bangla Academy on Wednesday afternoon.
He highlighted that attempts have been made to divide the forces of the uprising with false information, but the movement was not about discord or division. "We stood united against injustice, irrespective of religion, caste, tribe, or political ideology," he said. He urged people to remember and honor those who were martyred and injured during the uprising.
The event was attended by leaders and activists from various political parties and students who were imprisoned during the July movement. Calls were made for the official gazetting of political prisoners.
NCP Member Secretary stressed the importance of prisons respecting civil rights and human dignity and urged the government to take steps to release expatriate prisoners still incarcerated.
AB Party Chairman warned against future discrimination against July fighters and criticized the labeling that excludes anyone other than the Awami League from being recognized as such. He expressed hope for a new republic in Bangladesh.
The Jamaat Secretary called on the government to address corruption and irregularities in prisons, underscoring the urgent need for prison reforms.
