Dhaka, Aug 19 (V7N) – Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed paid a courtesy call on British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cook today at noon, during which they discussed various aspects of the judiciary and ongoing reforms.

The British High Commissioner congratulated Dr. Ahmed on his one-year anniversary as Chief Justice and praised his efforts toward achieving institutional independence in Bangladesh’s judiciary. She highlighted several initiatives introduced under his leadership, including:

  • The announcement of a roadmap for judicial reform.

  • Issuance of 12-point instructions to increase transparency in judicial services.

  • Introduction of capacity tests to provide legal aid to defendants.

  • Formulation of a law for appointing high court judges through the Supreme Judicial Appointments Council.

  • Launch of the Supreme Court Helpline for trial aspirants.

  • Development activities to strengthen subordinate courts.

The British High Commissioner emphasized that the Chief Justice’s strong leadership will play a crucial role in promoting good governance and ensuring justice in Bangladesh. She also assured continued support from the United Kingdom in building a robust judicial system in the country.
