Dhaka, Oct 09 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Association (BCDA) has demanded an increase in the commission on medicine sales from 12 percent to 25 percent, warning that they will close down 500,000 pharmacies across the country if their demands are not met within 15 days.

Leaders of the association issued the ultimatum at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Thursday (October 9) morning.

At the event, the association’s president said that since 1940, pharmaceutical manufacturing companies had paid 15 percent commission on drug sales. However, in 2025, the rate was reduced to 12 percent, putting severe financial strain on small and medium-sized pharmacies.

Pharmacy owners claim that the current 12 percent commission is no longer viable due to rising operational costs, including rent, staff salaries, and electricity. They have urged the government and relevant authorities to increase the commission rate “in coordination with neighboring countries.”

The BCDA leaders warned that if their demands are ignored, they will enforce strict action, including shutting down all retail pharmacies across Bangladesh.
