Dhaka, Nov 21 (V7N) — A powerful earthquake measuring between 5.5 and 5.7 on the magnitude scale shook the entire country, including the capital Dhaka, at 10:39 am on Friday. The tremor, which lasted only a few seconds, sent millions of people rushing out of homes, offices and commercial buildings in panic.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the quake measured 5.7 in magnitude and had its epicenter in Narsingdi at a depth of 10 kilometers. Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the tremor at magnitude 5.5.
Meteorologists classify such quakes as moderate, capable of causing minor structural damage. However, initial reports indicate casualties and destruction in parts of Dhaka. So far, three deaths have been reported, while several buildings have reportedly collapsed in different areas of the capital.
The sudden jolt sparked widespread panic among residents. Large crowds gathered on streets and open spaces as aftershock fears spread.
The earthquake was also felt in neighboring India. According to NDTV, tremors were experienced in Kolkata and several surrounding areas of West Bengal.
Authorities are assessing the damage, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
