Dhaka, Dec 11 (V7N) — Information Ministry Secretary Mahbuba Farzana has said that one of the major challenges ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections is to clearly explain the yes or no voting system to the public. She emphasized that public relations officers (PROs) and regional information officers must play an active role in raising awareness.
She made the remarks on Thursday (December 11) at a view-exchange meeting held at the Information Department of the Secretariat, presided over by Chief Information Officer Md. Nizamul Kabir.
The Information Secretary stated that the government is committed to ensuring a fair, acceptable, and transparent election, adding that all necessary cooperation will be provided to the Election Commission.
Referring to the public’s “bitter experiences” with elections over the past 15 years, she stressed the need to encourage citizens—especially youth, women, and marginalized voters—to participate and come to the polling booths. She said the yes/no vote system must be explained in simple terms as many people are not familiar with it.
Mahbuba Farzana also highlighted the crucial role of information officers in tackling rumors and misinformation related to the polls. She urged officials to familiarize themselves with election laws and regulations to communicate accurately with the public.
She further said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will work jointly with the Election Commission to conduct nationwide awareness campaigns ahead of the upcoming elections. Training programs for journalists in 30 districts will also be arranged as part of the election preparations.
