Dhaka, Jan 10 (V7N) — Legal Advisor Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul has said that the granting of bail to some accused Awami League activists is the responsibility of the judiciary, not the Law Ministry, and that any action regarding such judges falls under the authority of the Chief Justice.

He made the remarks while speaking at a dialogue on political parties, human rights, and freedom of expression held at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Saturday afternoon.

Responding to criticism that the Law Ministry was responsible for bail granted by the High Court, Dr. Nazrul said such accusations were misplaced. “When the caretaker government verdict was overturned, did the then Chief Justice Khairul Haque blame the Law Minister? Was the Law Minister blamed for the controversial actions of Justice Shamsuddin Manik?” he asked.

He emphasized that neither the Law Minister nor the Legal Advisor has any role in judicial decisions regarding bail. “Blaming the Law Minister or me for court verdicts has no legal basis,” he said.

Dr. Nazrul further claimed that he was being targeted for two reasons. “First, criticism of me has become a business—views increase, monetization happens. Second, there is a specific political agenda. Weakening me would make it easier to implement that agenda,” he said.

He also revealed that three or four advisors of the interim government had considered resigning at different times due to sustained criticism and pressure. Describing the challenges of his role, Dr. Nazrul said constant abuse, threats, and fear for personal safety have made life extremely difficult.

“The Chief Advisor told us that if one advisor resigns, the morale of others will be damaged and further instability will follow. That is why I am continuing my work,” he said, adding that he remains committed to responding to all allegations as long as he stays in Bangladesh.
