Dhaka, Feb 19 (V7N) — Railways, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said restoring order on the country’s roads is a central objective of the government’s 180-day action plan.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon.

Eid Travel Arrangements

The minister said the government aims to ensure smooth travel for people during the upcoming Eid by following last year’s management approach, while also exploring additional measures to improve the situation further.

Progress on Transport Projects

Regarding major infrastructure initiatives, he noted that work on the Metrorail has resumed and will proceed at a faster pace.

He was critical of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) project, saying it was not designed with the state’s broader interests in mind. Although the ministry is not keen to continue the project, he added that any decision — including suspension — would be taken in accordance with proper procedures.

Traffic Congestion Measures

On the issue of auto-rickshaws, Sheikh Rabiul Alam said no final decision has been made about banning them. However, the two city corporations will be engaged to clear sidewalks and regulate auto-rickshaw movement as part of efforts to reduce congestion.

He emphasized that improving road discipline and ensuring safer, smoother journeys remain immediate priorities for the government.
