Dhaka, Jul 13 (V7N) — Although heavy rainfall that began on Saturday morning subsided by Sunday evening, waterlogging continued to paralyze traffic and public life across several parts of the capital until late at night, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
The prolonged rainfall brought much of Dhaka to a standstill, with severe traffic congestion, overcrowded public transport and flooded roads causing immense hardship for office-goers, students and people from all walks of life.
Even after the rain stopped, large stretches of roads remained submerged, disrupting vehicle movement until the early hours of Monday.
A visit to several areas of the capital found water still accumulated on roads from ECB Chattar to the flyover, while similar conditions persisted in Motijheel, Kakrail, New Market, Mirpur and several surrounding neighborhoods.
Numerous vehicles, including CNG-powered auto-rickshaws and battery-operated three-wheelers, broke down after becoming stranded in floodwater, further worsening traffic congestion.
Commuters expressed frustration over the prolonged waterlogging, alleging that poor drainage management, unplanned road excavation and the authorities' negligence have turned even moderate rainfall into a recurring urban crisis.
Earlier on Sunday, continuous rainfall submerged many roads and low-lying areas across the capital, severely disrupting daily activities and bringing public life to a near halt. The situation created long delays for commuters and affected business operations, educational institutions and emergency transportation throughout the city.
Residents have once again called for effective drainage improvements and coordinated urban planning to prevent recurring waterlogging during the monsoon season.
