Dhaka, July 25 (V7N)- Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam has said the tribunal is investigating the Shapla Chattar case with utmost importance and that the formal trial is scheduled to begin on Monday (July 27).
He made the remarks while addressing a seminar on human rights violations and access to justice for victims at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Saturday (July 25).
The Chief Prosecutor said that of the 61 people listed by human rights organization Adhikar as having been killed in the incident, authorities have so far identified 58 individuals during the investigation.
He expressed hope that the tribunal's proceedings would help establish the facts surrounding the incident through due legal process.
The Shapla Chattar incident occurred on the night of May 5, 2013, during a Hefazat-e-Islam rally in the Motijheel area of Dhaka. According to allegations, law enforcement agencies—including the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)—launched a joint operation after 11:00 pm following the disconnection of electricity in the area.
It has been alleged that sound grenades, gunfire and baton charges were used during the operation, leading to the dispersal of protesters. The incident remains one of the most widely discussed and controversial events in Bangladesh's recent political history.
The tribunal is expected to begin formal proceedings on the case on Monday as part of its ongoing judicial process.
