Dhaka, Aug. 01 (V7N) – Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said the government is committed to resolving national issues through Parliament, despite what he described as a growing tendency among some groups to seek solutions through street movements.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion and photo exhibition organized by the Photo Journalists Association at the National Press Club on Saturday (Aug. 1) morning.
The information minister said many people appear to place greater emphasis on resolving issues on the streets than in the National Parliament. However, he stressed that the government believes national problems should be addressed through parliamentary processes and constructive dialogue.
Swapan also said that despite various movements, some groups remain unwilling to participate in meaningful discussions. According to him, agitation has become a profession for certain individuals.
He added that the government would not retreat from decisions taken in the national interest, even if doing so required making difficult choices.
Speaking at the same programme, Liberation War Minister Ahmed Azam Khan said the Liberation War of 1971 was fought through armed struggle, but people never imagined that lives would later have to be sacrificed for democracy in independent Bangladesh.
He said the government is working to heal what he described as the wounds left by fascism and reaffirmed that the BNP is committed to building the country on the foundations of democracy, justice and prosperity.
The discussion and photo exhibition were attended by journalists, media professionals and invited guests from different sectors.
