Dhaka, Oct 03 (V7N)- A special consignment of nuclear fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was transported from Dhaka to Rooppur under tight security on Saturday morning.

Three lorries carrying the fuel left for Rooppur at around 7:15 am as part of a security convoy led by the Bangladesh Army.

The convoy included personnel from the police, Special Security Force, Armed Police Battalion and other security units, along with a dog squad. Another vehicle carried equipment related to the consignment.

A team of Russian experts accompanied the convoy during the transportation of the nuclear fuel.

Authorities temporarily restricted traffic along sections of the route used by the convoy. The restrictions caused significant traffic congestion in several areas.

The development came after the aircraft carrying the uranium for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant arrived in Dhaka late Friday night, ending days of uncertainty surrounding the shipment.

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority received the consignment after its arrival in the capital.

The uranium shipment is part of the fuel supply for the country's first nuclear power plant. Additional consignments are scheduled to arrive on nine more flights during November and December.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, is being built with Russian technical and financial assistance. The project is expected to play a major role in expanding Bangladesh's electricity generation capacity.
