Dhaka, Oct 03 (V7N)- Police have sought a five-day remand of Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case filed over alleged disorder, obstruction of government work and insulting a security official at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The investigation officer of Airport Police Station submitted the remand application before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Saturday morning. The court is scheduled to hear the application at noon.
The Detective Branch (DB) arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in Cantonment's DOHS area on Friday afternoon.
The case was filed at Airport Police Station on Thursday night by an airport security official following an incident at the airport.
According to the case statement, a dispute arose at around 10:15 pm on Thursday in the luggage belt area after passengers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-338 from Medina, Saudi Arabia, disembarked.
The statement said a shortage of trolleys at luggage belt No. 8 caused delays in passengers collecting their baggage, leading to tension in the area.
Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the spot after being informed about the situation and attempted to calm the passengers, according to the case documents.
The statement alleged that Akhtaruzzaman approached the executive director in an aggressive manner during the incident and verbally abused and threatened him.
Police subsequently filed the case under relevant provisions relating to disorder, obstruction of government duties and insulting a security official.
The investigation officer sought five days of remand for questioning Akhtaruzzaman in connection with the allegations. The court's decision on the remand application is expected after the scheduled hearing.
