Dhaka, Oct 12 (V7N)- President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stressed that there is no alternative to strictly enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against violence, rape and sexual harassment involving women and children.
He made the remarks at a programme marking International and National Girl Child Day at the Bangladesh Shishu Academy on Monday morning.
The President called for prompt investigations, effective trials and strict enforcement of the law in cases of violence and sexual abuse. He said that although Bangladesh had made progress in several areas, it continued to lag behind in others.
Emphasizing the importance of parental responsibility, he said parents must ensure their children's safety and well-being. However, he urged society to abandon the mindset that girls should remain confined to their homes.
The President also encouraged girls who experience injustice to speak up and report incidents to the authorities rather than remain silent. He said the government was working to ensure the safety and security of women and children.
He further urged all girls to learn martial arts for self-defence, stressing that women's achievements benefit not only their families but also the country as a whole.
