Dhaka, Oct 13 (V7N)- President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged authorities to ensure that disaster management plans are implemented effectively rather than remaining confined to paper, stressing the need for forward-looking policies and integrated planning.

He made the remarks at a programme held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre on Tuesday, October 13, marking International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The President said Bangladesh faces multiple disaster risks, including river erosion, coastal salinity and earthquakes, requiring coordinated and long-term measures to protect lives and property.

He called for initiatives to strengthen riverbanks and expand tree-planting programmes to help reduce environmental risks and improve resilience to disasters.

Mirza Fakhrul also emphasized the importance of developing a science-based, transparent and accountable disaster management system to ensure effective preparedness, response and risk reduction.
