Dhaka, Oct 17 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that equality, human dignity, social justice and the welfare of humanity are among the fundamental teachings shared by all religions.

He made the remarks in a message issued on Saturday on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja, extending greetings to the Hindu community of Bangladesh and followers of traditional religions on the occasion of one of the major religious festivals of Hindus worldwide.

In his message, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of respecting different religious beliefs and cultural traditions while maintaining peace and harmony in society. He said mutual respect, dignity and compassion among people are essential to building a peaceful social environment.

Referring to Hindu religious beliefs, Tarique Rahman said Goddess Durga descends to the mortal world to promote the welfare of humanity, protect her devotees and destroy evil forces. He noted that the festival's message of overcoming evil and upholding truth and beauty gives Durga Puja its distinctive significance.

The Prime Minister said people of different religions and communities in Bangladesh were practising their faiths with enthusiasm. He described this coexistence as an important reflection of the country's religious traditions, social values and cultural heritage.

He added that religious, cultural and social activities help strengthen friendship, harmony, goodwill and brotherhood among people of different faiths, ethnicities and communities.

Referring to Bangladesh's political transition, Tarique Rahman said the country had resumed its journey towards democracy after the ouster of what he described as a fascist regime, following the sacrifice of thousands of lives. He said a broad effort to rebuild the country had begun.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to building a welfare-oriented, safe and humane Bangladesh for all citizens, regardless of political views, religion or community. He expressed hope that the country's diversity would be enriched by greater mutual respect and harmony.
