The High Court has suspended the gazette of the EC declaring Md. Abdul Hai as the winner of Jhenaidah-1 Constituency.

A single High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman gave the order on Thursday. Advocate Mojibur Rahman heard on behalf of the writ.

Since 2001, Md. Abdul Hai has been elected Member of Parliament for the fifth time in a row with the boat symbol. He also served as the Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Resources for some time.

According to the result, Abdul Hai got 95 thousand 674 votes in this seat. His nearest rival independent candidate Nazrul Islam Dulal (truck symbol) got 79 thousand 728 votes.

The total number of voters in the constituency is 3 lakh 6 thousand 336 people. Among them, 1 lakh 53 thousand 577 male voters, 1 lakh 52 thousand 759 female voters. The total number of centers here is 117.

This time, independent candidate Nazrul Islam Dulal filed an election petition seeking the suspension of the gazette of the post of MP of Jhenaidah-1 constituency, alleging irregularities and manipulation in the polling and counting of votes.

In the application of the defeated independent candidate, it is said that the independent candidate Nazrul Islam was declared the winner of the central result. But the returning officer of Jhenaidah announced the winner of the boat candidate Abdul Hai as a result of the overall seat.

To judge why this matter happened, the High Court accepted the appeal of the defeated independent candidate Nazrul Islam for hearing.

Appellant's lawyer Mujibur Rahman said that the appeal will be settled within the next 2 months. However, he also said that the court has not given any order on whether there is any constitutional problem if there is no member of parliament in that seat.

The Returning Officer announced the winner of Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) boat candidate Abdul Hai as a result of the 12th parliamentary election on January 7.
