Dhaka, August 12 – The interim government of Bangladesh has initiated significant reforms in the health sector, focusing on the cancellation of illegal appointments and restructuring within the Health Department. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to restore transparency and efficiency within the sector.

A notification issued by Dr. Md. Harun-or-Rashid, Director of Health Department (Administration), outlined the recent changes. The notification confirmed that numerous illegal appointments of medical officers and officials in various capacities have been annulled. Additionally, the government is ensuring that promotions and transfers are conducted based on seniority and merit.

The positions affected by these reforms include Deputy Civil Surgeon, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Senior Scientific Officer, Junior Lecturer, Resident Surgeon, Resident Medical Officer (6th Grade), Resident Physician, Senior Store Officer, Curator, Senior Clinical Pathologist, Principal Medical Physicist, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, Superintendent (6th Grade), and Assistant Director (6th Grade). The notification emphasized that these posts will now be filled through regular promotions of cadre officers in the Health Department.

The government also announced that ad hoc, project-based, and non-cadre medical officers who were previously appointed to these posts have had their appointments canceled. These individuals have been transferred back to the Health Department, where they will be reassigned according to the department’s needs and in line with the new regulations.

These reforms are part of the interim government's broader strategy to address irregularities and improve the overall functioning of the health sector. By prioritizing seniority and merit-based promotions, the government aims to enhance the quality of healthcare services and restore public trust in the health administration.
