Dhaka, August 24 — At least 22 people have died and two are still missing following devastating floods in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura, triggered by continuous heavy rains over the past few days. The floods have severely impacted approximately 1.7 million people in the region, with about 66,000 residents already evacuated to shelters, according to reports by The Hindustan Times on Friday, citing the State Government's Directorate of Relief, Reconstruction, and Disaster Management.

The Tripura state government has reported landslides at 232 locations due to the torrential rains and floods. Rescue operations have been successfully carried out at 1,789 sites, while efforts continue at the remaining locations. The widespread destruction has prompted a significant response from the Indian government, with Home Minister Amit Shah announcing a relief package of 40 crore rupees for the flood-affected states.

To aid in the rescue and relief efforts, 11 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), three columns of the army, and four Air Force helicopters have been deployed in Tripura. The coordinated efforts aim to mitigate the effects of the disaster and provide immediate assistance to those in dire need.

The impact of the flooding extends beyond India, with neighboring Bangladesh also facing severe consequences due to the heavy rains and overflow from Tripura. Flash floods have occurred in 11 districts of Bangladesh, leading to significant destruction and loss of life. According to the Ministry of Disaster Management in Bangladesh, 13 people have died as a result of the floods. The fatalities include four in Comilla, one in Feni, two in Chittagong, one in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Laxmipur, and three in Cox's Bazar.

The floods in both countries have created a humanitarian crisis, with thousands displaced and in need of urgent relief. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, and authorities are urging residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. As both nations grapple with the aftermath, the focus remains on providing relief to the affected populations and preventing further loss of life.
