Dhaka, Aug 29 (V7N): On Thursday, Bangladesh officially signed the instrument of accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, becoming the 76th nation to do so.

Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus signed the instrument during a weekly meeting of the interim government's council of advisers, marking the occasion as a significant milestone. "It is a historic occasion," the chief adviser's press wing quoted him as saying.

The signing occurred just one day before the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, reinforcing Bangladesh's commitment to human rights. With this move, Bangladesh has now joined all nine core UN human rights treaties.

Earlier this week, the interim government took a further step by forming a commission to investigate all cases of enforced disappearances that occurred during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.
