Dhaka, Jan 01 (V7N) — Bangladesh achieved a historic milestone in December 2024 by receiving the highest-ever remittances in a single month. According to the Bangladesh Bank, remittances amounted to $2.64 billion during December, equivalent to 31,668 crore taka (based on an exchange rate of 120 taka per dollar).
This figure surpasses the previous record of $2.59 billion sent by expatriates in July 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, by 24%.
Data from the Bangladesh Bank shows that the remittances received in December 2024 were $648 million higher than the same period in the previous year, which saw $1.991 billion. Apart from July 2024, the country received over $2 billion in remittances every month throughout the year.
Experts attribute this remarkable growth to increased overseas employment, enhanced banking services for expatriates, and policy measures aimed at incentivising remittance flows.
This record-breaking inflow reflects the dedication of Bangladesh's remittance warriors and underscores the critical role they play in bolstering the nation’s economy.
