Dhaka, August 8 — In anticipation of the swearing-in ceremony of the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh Bank has implemented a temporary restriction on cash withdrawals to ensure security and stability.
According to an urgent directive issued to the Managing Directors (MDs) of all banks on Wednesday night, no more than one lakh BDT can be withdrawn from any bank account today. Customers can still transfer any amount of cash digitally or by cheque. Additionally, the central bank has ordered a halt to money disbursements from head offices to branches for today.
This measure comes in response to an increased pressure on cash withdrawals following the recent change in government. There has been significant demand for cash withdrawals from individuals associated with pro-Awami League politicians and business families. The restriction aims to prevent the misuse of funds for any terrorist or illegal activities.
Bangladesh Bank's guidelines emphasize the use of digital transactions and cheques to facilitate payments and maintain financial stability during this transition period. Further updates and instructions will be communicated as the situation evolves.
