Dhaka, Jan 03 (V7N) — The bone-chilling winter in Dhaka has severely affected the lives of low-income residents, disrupting their sleep and reducing their daily earnings. Many families are struggling to cope with the cold, which has forced them to seek warmth around makeshift fires.

In various parts of the capital, scenes of people huddling around fires for warmth are common. Sumona Begum, along with her family, was seen sitting by a fire, not for cooking but to fend off the biting cold. "The nights are unbearable," she said.

Sohag Mia, who earns a daily wage, shared his struggles, saying his income has dropped significantly due to fewer opportunities to work in the cold weather. Others, like flower seller Hima and street vendor Taslima, echoed similar concerns. "The cold has robbed us of both sleep and income," Taslima lamented, adding that her sales of flowers and snacks have plummeted.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has reported that such harsh conditions are expected to last another 3-4 days. "Temperatures will rise once the fog subsides and sunlight returns," a spokesperson said. The lowest temperature of the season in Dhaka was recorded at 13.8 degrees Celsius on Friday, further highlighting the severity of the situation.

As residents brave the harsh winter, many are calling for additional support to help them survive the cold spell, which has added yet another challenge to their daily lives.
