Dhaka, July 2 (V7N) — The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has officially prohibited the carrying of sharp or potentially dangerous objects, including sticks and traditional weapons, during the upcoming Tazia processions to be held in the capital on the occasion of Holy Ashura on July 6.

The announcement came in a directive signed by Mohammad Sarwar, Additional Commissioner of DMP (Traffic) and Acting Commissioner, issued on Wednesday.

According to the DMP notice, the following items are strictly banned from being carried, used, or displayed during the processions: machetes (da), knives, scissors, spears (borsha), javelins (ballom), swords, and sticks, along with any other objects considered dangerous. The ban will be in effect throughout the entire duration of the Ashura-related processions in Dhaka.

The DMP stated that this measure has been enforced under Sections 28 and 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, 1976, as part of a broader effort to ensure public safety, maintain law and order, and prevent any untoward incidents during the religious observance.

Background on Ashura and Procession Traditions:

Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram — the first month of the Islamic calendar — is one of the most sacred days for Muslims, particularly for Shia communities. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala.

Tazia processions, a key part of the observance, often involve symbolic displays of mourning, including chest-beating, recitations, and occasionally the carrying of traditional arms. While these are deeply rooted in cultural and religious tradition, authorities have increasingly imposed restrictions in recent years to prevent misuse and maintain public safety.

Enforcement and Appeal for Cooperation:

The DMP has called on procession organizers and participants to adhere strictly to the regulations. Any violation of the directive will be subject to legal action under the applicable law. Law enforcement officers will be deployed along procession routes to monitor compliance and assist with the smooth conduct of the events.

The notice reflects a continued effort by Dhaka authorities to balance respect for religious freedom with the imperatives of public security.
