Dhaka, August 8 — Residents of the capital city spent a tense night on Wednesday as the fear of robberies gripped various neighborhoods. Local students and community members took matters into their own hands, apprehending several armed individuals and handing them over to army patrols. This effort to thwart robberies involved organizing area-based guards and using loudspeakers to warn of potential threats.

Despite these efforts, the city dwellers are eager to see a swift improvement in the law and order situation. They have demanded that all necessary measures be taken to restore peace and safety.

In one notable incident, several would-be robbers were caught by locals in the ECB Chatter area during an attempted robbery. These individuals were subsequently handed over to army patrols. Similar scenes unfolded in Basila, where local students detained some teenagers carrying sharp weapons. Other areas, including Mohammadpur, Adabar, Uttara, and Mirpur, also reported arrests and the seizure of firearms.

Throughout the night, students and residents of various neighborhoods organized patrols. These groups included people of all ages, from young boys to elderly men, who searched anyone exhibiting suspicious behavior. Vehicles were also subject to checks. Locals organized these patrols out of concern for their safety.

Women, too, were actively participating in these night watches alongside men, driven by a shared commitment to ensuring a safe city for all.

However, the residents are calling for a swift return to normalcy. They emphasize the urgent need for police activities to resume in order to effectively handle the current situation. Students have vowed to continue their neighborhood patrols until regular police patrolling is reestablished.
