Nilphamari, Dec 08 (V7N) — As temperatures continue to plummet in Nilphamari, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, residents are battling extreme cold conditions. The district has been experiencing minimum temperatures fluctuating between 11°C and 14°C over the past week. On Sunday, the lowest temperature of 14.0°C was recorded in Dimla Upazila.

A cold wind accompanied by dense fog blankets the region from evening to morning, severely impacting daily life. Even during the day, thick fog forces vehicles to operate with their headlights on to avoid accidents, and traffic speed has significantly decreased.

Dense fog from morning until 11:30 am disrupted flight schedules at Saidpur Airport, delaying takeoffs and landings. Passengers traveling on Saidpur-Dhaka routes faced significant inconvenience due to poor visibility.

The freezing conditions have hit low-income groups particularly hard. Without adequate winter clothing, many are resorting to lighting fires with straw to keep warm. Daily wage earners and labourers are forced to brave the cold and fog as they leave their homes for work.

The Rangpur Meteorological Department reported that while Saturday saw a low of 11.2°C, Sunday’s temperature in Dimla Upazila rose slightly to 14.0°C. Meteorologist Md. Mostafizur Rahman predicts that moderate to dense fog will persist in the district from midnight until morning in the coming days.

As the cold weather deepens its grip, residents are urging authorities and local organizations to provide warm clothes and assistance to help them cope with the freezing temperatures.
